Chinese, Egyptian folk musicians wow audiences under pyramids



On Monday night in Giza, Egypt, musicians from China and Egypt performed a folk music concert in front of the silver-lit Grand Pyramids and Sphinx, mesmerising hundreds of spectators.



At the location of the China-Egypt folk concert, banners with the words "Let the China-Egypt friendship flow forward like the Nile River" welcomed guests to this one-of-a-kind event, which was co-sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the Chinese Embassy in Egypt.


Hu Heping, the Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ahmed Issa, the Egyptian Ministers of Tourism and Antiquities, Neveen Al-Kilany, and Liao Liqiang, the Chinese Ambassador to Egypt, were among the 600 persons from both nations who attended the ceremony.


Classical and contemporary pieces of traditional Chinese music are performed by artists from the China National Traditional Orchestra, including "Horse Racing" on the erhu, "Umbrella and Orchid" on the huagudeng large gongs and drums, and "Dunhuang" for chamber ensemble.


As a tribute to the instruments' shared ancestry, Chinese and Arab musicians also collaborated to create "Impression of Roses," in which the Chinese pipa and Arabian oud were played in an ensemble, resulting in breath-taking melodies that mesmerised the listeners.

New Show ‘Ancient Egypt by Trains’ Takes Us From Alexandria to Aswan
